If you are new to SEO or Search Engine Optimization you may be wondering what search engine optimization actually is. It can sound really scary and complicated and it makes some people want to throw their hands up in the air and not bother with it. Proper SEO can help your website receive much more organic search traffic from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Two Kinds of SEO

There are two kinds of Search Engine Optimization. On page SEO and off page SEO. On Page SEO has to do with optimizing the way your website is setup. It means optimizing the Title tags, descriptions, and header tags the best way possible. If you do some keyword research you can put some keywords in your Titles, descriptions, and headers that will eventually help you rank for those keywords and thus get more free traffic to your blog or website. One simple way to do a Title if you have a blog type website is to use a keyword you want to rank for in the Title of the blog post itself. The other way is to use a wordpress SEO plugin to put in some keywords if you don’t want to put keywords in the actual title of the blog post. On page SEO can make a huge difference on where a website ranks. If you do quality On Page SEO for your website you can pass a bunch of other websites for keywords you want as most websites do not optimize their on page SEO properly.

Off page SEO is search engine optimization that doesn’t have anything to do with how your website is built. Instead it has to do with how many links are pointing back to your website. The more quality links you have pointing back to your website the better. For example of what a link is every time you post a blog comment on a blogger’s website and leave your url you are getting a link to your website if they approve your comment. You can also get links from guest blogging, article directories, social media sites like twitter and facebook, and press releases. If you have a nice variety of links from all these sources and the links are from high page rank or moz rank trusted websites your links will be viewed as naturally built and your blog or website will climb in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

If you combine proper On page SEO with a good Off page SEO strategy your website should do quite well in Google, Bing, and Yahoo and many great things for your site will happen. First you will be getting more traffic which is great. As your traffic goes up your Alexa rank will go up and you will be able to charge people to advertise on your site if you choose or sell your own products. If you are all about writing you will get more readers to your blog posts. The other great thing is that your page rank and moz trust rank will go up. Page rank is important but moz trust rank is becoming even more important. If you have a moztrust rank of 5 or higher the search engines really trust your website and it will be easier for you to move up for keywords you want to rank for. To check your moztrust rank you can go to sites like www.opensiteexplorer.org Simply type in your website and click on compare link metrics and you can check your moztrust score.

I hope this clears up what search engine optimization actually is. It is the best proper way to optimize your site for on page and off page SEO so that the Search Engines can recognize what your site is doing and rank you accordingly in Google, Yahoo, and Bing based on how well you are doing optimizing your website and getting links.

Great tips. I still tend to give my posts obnoxiously long, silly tags, but the funny thing is that people do search those random topics and end up on my blog.

    Go figure.

Thanks so much LeighAnn for having me here. Such an honor.

@LadyEstrogen Thanks if you join with us we can be a power super trio.

@Julie Thanks a lot. Silly tags do work. I once tried to rank on google for as many weird phrases as possible. It was so much fun and it worked.

This was interesting. I’m new to the blogosphere and had never even heard of SEO. Being that I’ve never even heard of it until now I’m still a little lost so I’ll have to look into it further. Tim, if you don’t mind I may shoot you an email down the road with some questions. You obviously know your poop! Thanks for sharing this! :^)
