How Will She Know?

She’s a big girl now, my tiny baby.

Fairy tales and made up songs fill the silence on our drives to daycare along with a million questions, two million answers, and fingers up her nose.

Instead of walking, she skips, hops, or twirls.

Because why not?

Her love for her daddy and squeezes for her mommy or only surpassed by her love for trains, and she can’t imagine how anyone could not love a train.

Her exuberance and joy is contagious and I am grateful everyday for her perception, curiosity, and compassion.

I am thankful that this small child has made me a mother.

But how will she know the gift she has given me?

How could she ever understand how much she empowers me just through her smile; just through her hands in my hair?

By being her mother I have found my sense of self, I have found out who I am, and I have discovered a fight inside that I didn’t know existed.

How will she ever know the degree to which I will advocate for her?

Will she know that I watch her while she sleeps and thank God for her 10 toes and 10 fingers, her rosy cheeks and her curly pigtails, and her sweet kisses.

She will.

When she grows up and looks back.

When she is with someone close to her and feels unconditional love.

When she holds her own baby and feels the kind of love that only a mother can feel.

She will know.

And she will look at me.

And I will know.

Thank you mom.

I love you.

There are no words that can ever express my thanks and my love.

I LOVE THIS. I know exactly how you feel and you put it into words so beautifully. I never truly understood or appreciated my mom until I became a mom too. Now I stand in awe.
