Are You Listening?

Are you listening?

Have you ever really listened?

Without planning your next few words and without searching for the sentence that will outdo the story that was just told.

Can you hold back your “should of’s,” “I would have’s,” and “why didn’t you’s” to hear another person’s truth?

To listen as they open up and share a part of themselves with you, bringing you into what might be a terrible struggle for them, hard to discuss, embarrassing to admit, or painful to re-live.

Can you fully embrace their happiness when they smile bright and express a brilliant delight, bringing you into their light, sharing their joy?

Are you listening?

Really listening?

Let those you love know you hear them.

That their words matter.

Even if it’s just for a few minutes.

No advice necessary, no money spent, no lavish parties, no gifts needed.

Just time.

And quiet, undivided attention.

We all need to know this and keep in our minds and hearts. It’s so easy to hear without really listening.

I tried so hard to listen. I grew up in a home where no one ever listened to me. I was just a child. So I have always done my best to listen to people and to really hear them. This is a great thing to post. I hope more people read it and listen.

I felt un heard growing up too. And sometimes even now. It’s hard to open up now. But those around me really do want to hear.

I struggle with giving my undivided attention some days. Today I really listened to a friend. It was true connection. She felt heard and validated.

I also struggle some days but it’s because you give your attention when it’s needed that you are a wonderful friend.
