The Perfect Spot

The coughing started early into the morning hours. I laid in my bed silently begging it to stop; wishing it away so that I wouldn’t have to get out of my warm blankets and perfect spot that I had carved into the mattress over the last four hours.

“cough, cough, hack, hack”

Her chest rattled itself with coughs and uncomfortable moans and she called out for me. With an invisible force pulling me up I found my way to her room and sat beside her.

Her head was hot, body sweaty, and she semi-consciously climbed up and into my lap.

Her once little body sprawled out across my lap surprising me with its length; where did my baby go? Her long three year old legs that once tucked up perfectly into my arms were now resting across my legs reaching too far for my little girls legs to reach.

Her tiny girl hair that would never grow was growing so fast and almost mid back when it was brushed back from her face. She stopped grasping for my hair for comfort months ago and soothed herself to sleep on her own now, but tonight with her cough, reached for my hair and twirled her hands into it softly.

Back and forth we rocked, to our familiar rhythm we knew so very well.

I was transformed back to a place where she was my baby; content to go to sleep with her hands in my hair, comforted by my songs, and rocked to sleep by the swaying of the rocking chair.

And for that moment I carved out a new perfect spot.

With my big girl in my arms.

That was a sweet post. I hate being woken up at night too, but when those little ones are sick, it just breaks my heart. And even though I can’t make it go away, I take a lot of joy in the fact that I can just be a source of comfort.
