16 Year Old Self

Dear 16 year old self,

You know me; very well, we share the same face, skin, eyes, body…

Oh that body.

Wouldn’t you love to have a different one?

Well, appreciate the one you have now. You are gorgeous and don’t see how beautiful you really are.

Weight?

No.

Stand tall, find clothes that flatter you, and flaunt it! I’m proud of who you are and you should be too.

I’m here looking back at you from where you will be, 17 years from now, and I can tell you that you are blessed. You will work hard, struggle, feel heartache, cry, and go through a rollercoaster of emotions to say the least.

You are going to go through hell.

Yes.

There will be days when you won’t want to get out of bed, when the walls will feel as though they are closing in on you, and you are sure the silence is killing you.

It’s not.

It’s making you stronger.

Look at yourself now. Full of promise, time ahead of you, not yet sure of what you want to do with your life.

Take every day and hold it in your hand tightly. Cherish the good, the bad, and the seriously bad. Be thankful for every minute you are here because 17 years will go by in the blink of an eye. Listen closely to what friends aren’t saying, keep enemies close, hold the hands of family members, and make sure they know just how special they are.

Remember how important you are.

Read.

Don’t start smoking.

And one day you will be here with me, looking back, holding your hand to your chest, grateful for the gift God has given you.

Your daughter.

She’s real.

And she means everything to you.

You’ll get here with a lot of hard work, mascara, and meds.

I know because I did.

With a little help from you.
