More than one Sentence

The paper said “Describe your child’s personality in one sentence to help us to better get to know them.”

I says pardon?

One sentence?

How do I put into words the incredible child that I brought into this world and have watched grow from a tiny infant into the amazing four-year old that she is now?

Swirling in front of me I see words like compassionate, sensitive, hilarious, clever, smart, cheeky, energetic, intense, cuddly, and loud. I watch more words and sentences pour out as I go through scenes in my head and play out her entire four years.

There are times I can’t describe because I’m busting with a love I have never experienced before, there are days I didn’t think I would make it through parenting, and there are moments I wanted to freeze in time.

My head spins with images of a baby who wouldn’t stop throwing up but laughed with the biggest laugh I had ever heard, a toddler determined to stand and climb, a determination that followed her through to kindergarten where she learned to spell her name and count to 30.

I can see her sweet face as she softly kissed my cheek, knowing I was sad, telling me she loved me forever and ever and climbing into my lap. Just being with me. Her love surrounding me and taking the pain that crushed my entire being away for that minute.

There is squealing while she swings, feet high in the air as she learns to pump her legs back and forth, back and forth, and a huge cheer when she sees she’s succeeded. A goal met!

And tears, loneliness, sadness, a broken heart when a little boy hurts her feelings for the first time at school and she crawls up beside me, resting her head on my shoulder for comfort and listening quietly as we talk about feelings and putting the pieces back together.

One sentence?

She is unicorns, candy, pigtails, snow days, rubber boots, and lip gloss.

She is never-ending hugs, I love you’s, good night stories, and bubble baths.

And what she is made up of is so much more than one sentence.

I wrote a novel in tiny script. One sentence?!? Are you kidding me? It’s not possible.
